H.P.D. PROGRAMS

D.A.R.E - Drug Abuse Resistance Education

Hanson takes great pride in the fact that it remains one of the few communities in Massachusetts that instructs students in all grades on a fulltime basis. The D.A.R.E. curriculum is a portion of this daily instruction for grades K - 8. D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The DARE/Student Safety Officer (Rick Nawazelski is the educational liaison to the Whitman/Hanson Regional School District and is assigned as the full time D.A.R.E. / Student Safety Officer on a full-time basis. Officer Nawazelski offers instruction to students on a daily basis throughout the school year. Officer Nawazelski also works closely with the School Resource Officer, Brian Watson on issues of student safety and school security.

The D.A.R.E./Student Safety program in Hanson’s four schools begins at the kindergarten level and continues through the high school. In addition to the D.A.R.E. curriculum, we address a myriad of topics such as Stranger Danger, Train Safety, Bicycle Safety, Pedestrian Safety, Seat Belt Use, Bullying, Gangs, Student Self-esteem, Dating and Domestic Violence.

Officer Nawazelski has also undertaken instruction for students regarding internet safety, instant messaging dangers and identity theft.
Officer Nawazelski also participates in Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz’s Summer Day Program. This is a two week annual endeavor which generally occurs during the last week in July and the first week in August for students entering the sixth grade. Many communities in Plymouth County participate in this program. Officer Nawazelski helped pioneer this program, which will be experiencing its 12th consecutive year in 2006. The Town of Hanson will be hosting the second week of the camp this year at the Hanson Middle School. The campers learn about the effects and consequences of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs from police officers and peer leaders. The camp reinforces important lessons on good decision making, positive self esteem and team work in a setting designed for a full day of fun.

Officer Nawazelski can be reached by phone at 781-293-4625 extension 116 or by email: rick.nawazelski@whrsd.org

Officer Watson and I have also “caught” many situations before they turned into crimes by being at the schools and helping eliminate the threats before they become crimes or someone gets hurt.

Our Mission Statement:
The Police department and the community of Hanson envision a future in which all citizens of the community enjoy an enhanced quality of life and a reduction of crime, social disorder and fear of crime. We realize this mission by providing excellence in policing through diligence, integrity, respect, fairness and compassion.
